The CSA and Farmers Market season has begun! This is the fourth week of my Affinity Farm CSA and the fourth week of the Moscow Farmers’ Market.
Affinity Farm CSA week 1 – green garlic, bok choy, arugula, dry beans (from the 2017 season) and home grown rhubarb!
With the our sunny Saturdays, the Moscow Farmers Market has been packed with excited customers, brightly colored booths, vegetable, flower and fruit starts and early spring greens! And, its all about greens! Early spring mixes, arugula, spinach, green garlic, green onions, bok choy, asparagus and the list goes on.
Deep Roots Farm vegetable starts at the Moscow Farmers Market.
Memorial weekend is a great time to plant your garden and there are lots of starts at market this time of year.
If you are looking for fruit, last week, there were a few ripe strawberries at market and yesterday was the opening day of strawberry U-picking at Hodapp’s Berry and Dairy in Lewiston, Idaho – a great Memorial Day outing! Check out their website and like Hodapp’s Facebook page to stay up-to-date on strawberry picking hours. Hodapp’s strawberries are ever bearing, so you can U-pick there all summer long!
Couple those berries with the fresh rhubarb at market (or in your or a friend’s backyard) and who knows what amazing dishes you will create (strawberry rhubarb salsa, relish, crisp, pie, jam…).
Deep Roots Farm strawberry and kale starts.
Speaking of relish, last week I made a quick rhubarb and radish relish for street tacos:
Spring Rhubarb and Radish Relish Recipe: (try saying that 5 times fast!)
1 stalk of rhubarb 5 spring radishes 2 spring eating turnips 2 stalks of spring garlic (white part only) 1/4 red onion cilantro leaves fresh lime juice pink Himalayan salt to taste
Finely chop all ingredients, place in a small bowl. Add about two tablespoons lime juice and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Mix. Add cilantro to taste. Serve on a warm corn tortilla with your choice of protein, cheese and local green onions!
Over the next several week, many more farmers markets in the Palouse-Clearwater region are opening. To find a farmers market near you, check out our new Palouse-Clearwater story map. Click on the farmers market tab and see where there are markets near you. If we missed a market or other local food listing, let us know! Just email us at pcfoodcoalition@gmail.com! We’ll add it to the map.
